When recycling took off in the United States in the early 1990s, the environmentally conscious were instructed to sort their recyclables into separate bins.

 

Paper went into one bin, plastic in another, glass sorted by color into another bin. By the end of the decade, however, technology that allowed single-stream recycling was developed.

 

At last, even the laziest among us had no excuse to avoid recycling. Under the single-stream recycling system, all recyclables go into a single bin.

 

At the recycling plant, recyclables are loaded onto a conveyer belt and pushed off in response to certain stimuli: Magnets lift iron-based metals from the belt; puffs of air blow paper from the line, and so on.,

*June 25, 2026 Update*

Due to a change in policy by Lycoming County Resource Management Services--the location where the Borough takes its recycling--it is necessary that we stop accepting any glass as part of our recycling program, including both curbside pickup and recycling center drop off.

In order to all the Borough ample time to ensure that no glass goes to LCRMS, the last days we will accept any glass will be Thursday, July 9 for pickup, and Saturday, July 11 for drop off. (On a related noted, the drop off center will be closed Saturday, July 4, with July 11 to serve as a makeup date. This will get its own post soon, but we wanted to be clear on this post that the center will be open on July 11, and that this will be the last chance for residents to bring any glass.)

As is the case currently, our Public Works staff will not be able to sort through recycling at curbside to determine what can and cannot be accepted. As such, any recycling left at curbside that includes glass will NOT be picked up, starting the week of July 13.

We apologize for any inconvenience this causes, and thank all Borough residents for understanding as we attempt to remain in compliance with LCRMS rules and regulations.

  • NO GARDEN HOSES
  • NO COAT HANGERS

 

Do not tie up recyclables in garbage bags; drivers will not open bags to check to see if it's recyclables or garbage.

 

If you are using garbage cans or plain plastic bins please pick up new bins at the recycling drop off site.

 

At this time the Borough does have blue recycling bins. They may be picked up at Test Track Park recycling/compost site with indentification.
